Trust is the foundation that supports the success of financial markets and the investment management industry at large. It underpins investor satisfaction, well-functioning markets, and client relationships. In the last ten years, our industry has adopted rigorous new standards, practices, and regulations that have helped reclaim the trust lost in the wake of the global financial crisis.
CFA Institute recently asked more than 800 institutional investors and 3,100 retail investors in 12 markets about their current level of trust in the financial services industry. The signs are positive, and trust levels among investors have risen since a similar survey conducted in 2016.
Putting clients first, being transparent about fees and performance, and demonstrating expertise all help advisers continue to earn the trust of their clients. And while the elements that influence trust can vary across markets, credibility and professionalism — traits CFA® charterholders embody everyday — are universal factors needed by investment professionals to continue building trust.
